Teaching a group of gifted children has its challenges. Most of these challenges are good. Some of these challenges are just out and out strange. A heated debate broke out about whether or not the characters in the Lord of the Rings would be eligible for income protection insurance. It was very interesting; if one was injured on a quest, would that count as being injured on the job? The next question was about how would you put a value on the income collected by saving Middle Earth? And, more importantly, who would benefit from the policy? A calm was restored by saying the insurance company could make a case for self injury since all of the Fellowship volunteered, so technically counted as self-injury. It was very informative, mainly because I did not realize that so many of these students knew so much about the insurance business in the first place.
